Who Was The First National Chairman Of The All Progressive Congress?
The first national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was Chief Adebisi Bamdele Akande. He was born on January 16, 1939, in Ila-Orangun, Osun State, Nigeria.
Akande worked for British Petroleum from 1963 to 1979, where he became a manager in the System and Computer Services department.
Also, he studied accounting and became a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Cost and Management Accountants. However, Akande’s political career began in 1971 when he was appointed to the Ila Local Government Management Committee.
He later became a councilor in 1976 and was elected to represent his local government in the Nigerian Constituent Assembly in 1977.
Akande’s early political affiliation was with the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN), led by Chief Obafemi Awolowo. He was the Deputy Chairman of the party at the state level and was a member of its National Executive Committee.
In 1999, Akande became the second governor of Osun State, after Nigeria returned to democratic rule. He served from 1999 to 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) party.
His tenure saw infrastructure development and efforts to improve governance in the state, although he faced challenges like political rivalries and funding problems. After his time as governor, Akande was part of Afenifere, a Yoruba socio-political group.
In 2003, he became the National Chairman of the Alliance for Democracy, and in 2010, he was re-elected as the National Chairman of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).
In 2013, Akande was instrumental in the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The APC was created from the merger of several opposition parties, including Akande’s Action Congress of Nigeria. He was the first interim national chairman of the APC until 2014.
Under his leadership, the party became a strong opposition force to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), which had been in power at the time.
