List Of Commandant Generals Of NSCDC (2004-Present)

The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is the top leader responsible for overseeing the organization.

This position was established in 2004 and is held by a General who is supported by a Deputy and Assistant Commandants.

Who Was The First Commandant General Of NSCDC

Abiola Aturamu was the first Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), serving from 2004 to 2005.

The organization was officially structured under the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Act of 2003. This act was created to make the NSCDC more effective in its job of providing security and civil defense in Nigeria.

However, Aturamu had experience in security and civil service before becoming the Commandant Genera. His main focus was to create the rules and guidelines that would help the NSCDC do its job of protecting lives, property, and critical infrastructure, like oil pipelines and power plants.

During his short time as leader, Aturamu engaged with local communities and built partnerships with other security agencies.

After serving as acting Commandant General, Aturamu handed over the leadership to Dr. Adewale John Abolurin in 2005. Abolurin continued the work that Aturamu started.

Who Is The Current Commandant General Of NSCDC?

Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, OFR, mni,

Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, OFR, mni, is the current Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), having taken office in February 2021.

Dr. Audi was born on September 30, 1967, in Laminga Town, Nasarawa State. He began his education at Kofar Kudu Primary School and later attended Government Teachers’ College in Jengre, where he earned his Teachers’ Grade II Certificate in 1987.

In 1992, he completed his National Certificate in Education (NCE) from the College of Education, Akwanga.
Dr. Audi then went on to study at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical and Health Education in 1995.

After completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), he pursued a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Calabar. He also earned a Ph.D. in Public Administration from Nasarawa State University in 2014. Dr. Audi joined the NSCDC as a volunteer in 1996 and rose through the ranks.

He has served as Divisional Officer and Head of Operations. Since becoming Commandant General, he has made notable contributions, such as establishing training academies and improving security across Nigeria.

Under his leadership, over 1,254 arrests have been made between 2021 and 2023, and he has promoted gender inclusivity and better training programs for the corps.

Who Is The Current Deputy Commandant General Of NSCDC?

Shem Obafiaye.

The current Deputy Commandant General (DCG) of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is Shem Obafiaye.

He became widely known in 2013 after a television interview where he humorously referred to his boss as the “Oga At The Top.” This phrase became a popular meme in Nigeria.

Obafiaye started his career with the NSCDC in 1999, joining as a volunteer. He has also served as the Commandant of the Lagos State Command, where he was in charge of security operations and maintaining peace in the area.

In December 2023, Shem Obafiaye was promoted to Deputy Commandant General.
His promotion came as part of efforts by the Commandant General, Dr. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, to strengthen the NSCDC’s ability to handle security challenges in Nigeria.
