About the State
The North-Eastern Nigeria is a geopolitical zone and is home to Bauchi State. It is the fifth-largest state in Nigeria by land size, covering 49,119 sq km with an expected population of about 8.3 million as of 2022.
With a tiny portion of the Jos Plateau in the southwest, the terrain comprises the drier Sahelian and West Sudanian savannas in the north and south, respectively. The southern Yankari National Park, a sizable animal park, is one of the region’s notable geographical features.
The state capital is the ancient city of Bauchi. The former North-Eastern State was divided into Bauchi State in 1976. In 1996, Gombe State also started from Bauchi. (i.e Gombe State was created from Bauchi)
Bala AbdulKadir Mohammed of the PDP party is the current governor; he took office in 2019. Governor Auwal Jatau is the deputy. The state passed Sharia law in June 2001.
Crops like cotton, yams, tomatoes, millet, and groundnuts are important to the economy. Food processing and mining (tin, columbite) are some other industries.
There are more than 55 ethnic groups in the state, and their languages, customs, and holidays are all comparable. The Sayawa, Jarawa, Fulani, Kanuri, Gerawa, and Fulani are important groups. An important yearly cultural event is the Durbar festival.

The incumbent governor of Bauchi State is Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.

He was born in Bauchi Sate’s Alkaleri LAG on October 5, 1958. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Language from Maiduguri University in 1982.
He also started as a journalist before entering the government in 1984. Furthermore, he played a vital role in the 2010 “Doctrine of Necessity” invocation that made Goodluck Jonathan Acting President.
He was appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by President Jonathan and he was a Senator representing Bauchi South under the ANPP party in 2007.
He implemented major changes as the Minister of FCT from 2010 to 2015 like extensions of roads, land swap policy, and satellite towns.
He faced accusations of corruption by the EFCC in 2016 and spent 49 days in detention, a situation which he described as a “witch hunt”.
He won the PDP ticket and defeated incumbent Mohammed Abubakar to become the governor of Bauchi State in 2019 after which the Supreme Court upheld his election victory in January 2020.
While serving as governor, he launched initiatives like reclaiming stolen property, eliminating ghost workers, empowering programs, and modernizing healthcare and educational facilities.
