Who Was The First Civilian Governor Of Akwa Ibom State?

Obong Akpan Isemin

The first civilian governor of Akwa Ibom was Obong Akpan Isemin, who took office on January 2, 1992, under the National Republican Convention (NRC) party.

He was born around 1939 in Mbioto, Etinan local government area, and belonged to the Ibibio ethnic group. Isemin went to Etinan Institute for secondary school and later earned a degree in Economics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

He has worked in the oil industry and became an executive director at Avery Limited. He was also a columnist for the Business Times newspaper.

Isemin was known for his “Ubom Noah” (Noah’s Ark) philosophy, which focused on giving opportunities to people of all backgrounds. He increased Akwa Ibom’s monthly oil revenue allocation from N350,000 to N11.2 million, benefiting the state.

His time in office was cut short by the military coup that brought General Sani Abacha to power in November 1993. However, after his governorship, Isemin ran for office again but was not successful.

He passed away on June 23, 2009, at the age of 70. His death led to some controversy, with his widow blaming it on a lack of electricity at the hospital where he was treated.

Who Is The Current Governor Of Akwa Ibom State?

Umo Bassey Eno

Umo Bassey Eno is the current governor of Akwa Ibom State, having taken office on May 29, 2023. Eno is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and became governor after Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, who served from 2015 to 2023.

Umo Eno is not just a politician; he is also a pastor and a successful businessman, especially in the hospitality industry. In his first speech as governor, Eno shared his plans to improve education, healthcare, and farming in the state.

He also wants to create a friendly environment for investments and job creation to make Akwa Ibom a safe and welcoming place for investors.

Who Is The Current Deputy Governor Of Akwa Ibom State?

Senator (Dr.) Akon Eyakenyi

The current Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State is Senator (Dr.) Akon Eyakenyi. She took office on May 29, 2023, to make history as the first female deputy governor in the state.

Akon Eyakenyi is a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), born on February 24, 1960, in the Urue-Offong/Oruko Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

She attended Government Primary School, Uko Uyokim, and the Methodist Teacher’s Training College in Oron. Then, she went to the University of Calabar, and earned her Bachelor of Education in 1990, a Master of Education in 2000, and a Ph.D. in Curriculum Education in 2014.

Her political career started in 1991 when she was appointed as Supervisor for Education, Youth, Sports, and Culture in her local government.

She held different positions, including Commissioner for Industry, Commerce, and Tourism, and served as Minister of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development from 2014 to 2015.

Akon was a senator representing Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District from 2019 to 2023 before she became a deputy. She is also known for her work in promoting women’s rights and child welfare.
