Who Was The First Governor Of Ekiti State?
The first governor of Ekiti State in Nigeria was Colonel Mohammed Bawa. He became the military administrator after Ekiti State was created on October 1, 1996.
Before that, Ekiti was part of Ondo State. Colonel Bawa started his role as governor on October 7, 1996, and he served until August 1998.
His time in office was during a period of military rule in Nigeria, under General Sani Abacha. Colonel Mohammed Bawa was born in 1954 and had a career in the Nigerian Army.
During his time, Bawa worked on setting up the state’s administrative system and preparing it for future civilian government.
His leadership came with the typical challenges of military rule, such as limited political freedoms and a strong focus on maintaining order.
After Colonel Bawa’s term ended, Navy Captain Atanda Yusuf took over as the military administrator. Captain Yusuf served from August 1998 until May 1999.
On May 29, 1999, Otunba Niyi Adebayo became the first civilian governor of Ekiti State. Adebayo, from the Alliance for Democracy party, served until May 29, 2003.
Since its creation, Ekiti State has gone through many changes in its governance. The state has had both military and civilian leaders, and different political parties have been in charge at different times.
