How Many House Of Assembly Members Are In Kaduna State And What Their Function?

The Kaduna State House of Assembly consists of 34 members elected from the 34 state constituencies. This assembly, also known as Lugard Hall, serves as the legislative body for Kaduna State.

Its name honors Sir Frederick Lugard, the former Governor General of Nigeria. Established in the fourth republic on June 3, 1999, the assembly operates as a unicameral body, meaning it has a single chamber.

Its primary function is to create laws that govern the state. The assembly’s legislative powers date back to its role as the legislative house of defunct Northern Nigeria from 1954 to 1967, and earlier, under the British Colonial government of Nigeria from 1914 to 1954.

The assembly’s composition includes the honorable speaker, their deputy, and representatives from each state constituency.

These legislators, elected through a single vote basis, represent the 23 local government councils within Kaduna State.

In addition to its legislative duties, the assembly is housed within the Lugard Memorial Council Chamber, which also accommodates the Northern Nigeria Council of Chiefs.

This historic space has been key in legislative decisions not only for Kaduna State but also for the larger Northern Nigeria region during its colonial and post-colonial eras.
