What Is The Kogi State House Of Assembly?

The Kogi State House of Assembly serves as the legislative body for the government of Kogi State in Nigeria. Comprising 25 members, it’s responsible for making laws, modifying existing ones, and overseeing the executive branch.

This assembly is unique in that it’s unicameral, meaning it has a single chamber. Representation in the Kogi State House of Assembly is derived from the 21 local government areas within the state.

Each member is elected to represent a specific constituency within these areas. And, to ensure proper representation, two local government areas with larger populations are divided into two constituencies each.

Members of the assembly serve a term of four years, coinciding with federal legislators’ terms.

Their primary duty is to convene regularly to discuss and pass legislation. Sessions are held three times a week, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at the assembly complex in the state capital, Lokoja.

Currently, out of all 25 members of the 8th Kogi State House of Assembly, 22 belong to the All Progressives Congress (APC), one to the PDP, and one to the ADC.

This means that the APC holds the majority of seats in the assembly, and Its functions are essential to the state’s governance.

By passing new laws and amending or repealing existing ones, it shapes the legal framework that governs various aspects of life in Kogi State.

Who Is The Current Speaker Of The Kogi State House Of Assembly?

Hon. Aliyu Umar Yusuf currently serves as the Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly. Born on March 14, 1969, in Lokoja, he represents the Lokoja II constituency.

His dedication to humility, respect, hard work, perseverance, and faith has earned him widespread recognition. Yusuf, a graduate of Salem University, Lokoja, has a background in accounting and a passion for rural development.

He believes in using legislation to address the challenges faced by rural communities. One of his key initiatives is the Rural Development Enhancement Initiative, aimed at improving education and healthcare in rural areas.

Through grassroots engagement, Yusuf tailors his efforts to meet the needs of his constituents. His commitment to transparency and accountability has earned him respect from colleagues and the public alike.

Yusuf also prioritizes vocational education, recognizing its importance in empowering youth and driving sustainable development, and his Education Access has improved educational opportunities across Kogi State.

Who Is The Current Deputy Speaker Of The Kogi State House Of Assembly?

Comfort Nwochiola from Ibaji Constituency is the current Deputy Speaker of the Kogi State House of Assembly. She made history by becoming the first woman to hold this position in the state.

Her appointment followed the resignation of Enema Paul due to health reasons. Enema Paul, during the plenary session, revealed his health challenges which he had been battling since 2011, and expressed his commitment to seeking further treatment.

In response to the vacancy, the Kogi State House of Assembly nominated Comfort Nwochiola to ensure the continuity of legislative duties.

Abu Jibrin of Ajaokuta put forward the nomination, which was seconded by Seyi Bello of Kabba/Bunu. The nomination was unanimously accepted by fellow legislators, leading to Comfort Nwochiola taking the oath of office immediately.

Expressing her gratitude, Comfort Nwochiola thanked Governor Yahaya Bello, Speaker of the House Aliyu Yusuf, and all members for their support and for accepting her nomination.

Her appointment as the first female Deputy Speaker in Kogi State is an important milestone in the state’s legislative history.
