How Many Members Are In Lagos State House Of Assembly?

The Lagos State House of Assembly is composed of 40 legislators who are elected to represent the people of Lagos State.

These legislators are chosen from forty constituencies, which are distributed across the twenty Local Governments and thirty-seven Local Council Development Areas in the state.

Each constituency elects one representative to serve in the House of Assembly for four years.

The establishment of the Lagos State House of Assembly is mandated by Section 90 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

This constitutional provision grants the Assembly the authority to enact laws and legislate for the state.

Also, the Assembly is granted privileges and immunities to confirm its ability to carry out its legislative functions effectively without hindrance.

Located within the Lagos State Government Secretariat at Alausa in Ikeja Central Business District, the Assembly serves as a hub for legislative activities in the state.

Since its inception, the Assembly has undergone several iterations, with ten assemblies inaugurated to date. The first assembly was inaugurated on October 2, 1979, while the current assembly commenced its term on June 6, 2023.

However, the goal of the Lagos State House of Assembly is to provide representation and address the needs of the people of Lagos State. It is committed to informing the public about its responsibilities, services, and dedication to the welfare of all Lagosians.

The vision of the Assembly is to lead and set the standard for legislative bodies across Nigeria, while its mission is to enact laws that promote good governance.

Who Is The Current Speaker Of The Lagos State House Of Assembly?

Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa

Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa currently serving as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly. With an illustrious career spanning over two decades, Obasa has established himself as a respected lawyer and a dedicated politician.

Obasa’s journey into politics commenced in 1999 when he contested and won the seat of councilor at Agege local government under the Alliance for Democracy party.

His victory saw the beginning of a remarkable political career that would later see him rise to higher positions of authority.

In 2007, Obasa was elected to represent Agege Constituency I in the Lagos State House of Assembly, a position he has successfully retained through subsequent elections in 2011, 2015, and 2019.

As Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly since June 8, 2015, Obasa has demonstrated strong leadership and legislative skills.

Under his stewardship, the assembly has enacted laws and policies aimed at promoting good governance, fostering economic growth, and enhancing the overall well-being of Lagosians.

However, In 2020, he was embroiled in a corruption scandal following allegations of misappropriation of public funds.

Despite denying the accusations, he was questioned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and remains under investigation for alleged fraud.

Despite these challenges, Obasa continues to discharge his duties as Speaker with diligence and dedication. His contributions to the development of Lagos State and his commitment to upholding the principles of democracy are undeniable.

Who Is The Current Deputy Speaker Of The Lagos State House Of Assembly?

Mojisola Lasbat Meranda.

The current Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly is Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda. She represents the Apapa I constituency and has held this position across multiple legislative years.

Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda was born on the 16th of August 1980 in Lagos State, her home state. She attended Randle Primary School from 1986 to 1992 for her primary education.

For her secondary education, she attended Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School from 1992 to 1996 and later Ansar-ud-Deen Secondary School from 1996 to 1998.

Her tertiary education journey took her to Lagos State University (LASU) from 2009 to 2013, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Public Administration.

She is currently pursuing further studies at the University of Lagos (UNILAG). Throughout her career, Hon. Mojisola has gained valuable experience in various fields.

She worked as a Personal Assistant at the Office of the Surveyor General from 2003 to 2007 before moving to the oil and gas industry as a Procurement Manager at Cirrus Nigeria Limited from 2007 to 2008.

She then served at Apapa Local Government from 2008 to 2014, first as a Senior Special Assistant for Intervention and Intergovernmental Affairs, and later as a Supervisor for Health. From 2014 to 2015, she held the position of Head of Operations at Worthline International Services Limited.

In her political career, Hon. Mojisola has held several posts, including Senior Special Assistant at Apapa Local Government from 2008 to 2011 and Supervisor for Health from 2011 to 2014. She has been a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly since 2015, representing her constituency diligently.
