How Many Members Do We Have In The Kano State House Of Assembly?

The Kano State House of Assembly forms forty members who represent forty-four local government areas in Kano State, Nigeria.

As one of the arms of the state government, the House of Assembly plays a part in legislation alongside the Executive and Judiciary branches.

Located at the Abdu Bako Secretariat in the state capital, Kano Municipal, the Assembly serves as the legislative hub for the state.

Currently, the All Progressives Congress (APC) leads the Assembly. Since its inception, there have been nine different House of Assemblies in Kano State.

The inaugural Assembly commenced on October 2, 1979, with subsequent Assemblies following at intervals. The present Assembly, inaugurated on June 7, 2019, continues the legacy of legislative governance in the state.

With each member representing a specific local government area, the Assembly collectively addresses issues and concerns pertinent to Kano State’s diverse communities.

Through debates, deliberations, and legislative actions, the Assembly strives to legislate laws and policies that promote the welfare and development of the state and its citizens. Also, the Assembly offices provide spaces for members to engage in administrative tasks and constituent services.

Who Are The Current Speaker And Deputy Speaker Of Kano State House Of Assembly?

Jibrin Falgore

Jibrin Falgore currently serves as the Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly. He took this position following his election by members of the 10th Kano State House of Assembly on June 13, 2023.

Falgore, representing the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP), was nominated for the speakership by Lawan Hussaini, a member representing Dala Constituency.

His nomination was seconded by Musa Kachako, a member representing Takai Constituency. Falgore’s election as Speaker was accompanied by the election of Mohammed Butu-Butu as the Deputy Speaker.

Both Falgore and Butu-Butu were sworn in by the Clerk of the House, Ali Maje, by the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Expressing gratitude for his emergence, Falgore promised to keep his doors open for positive advice and assured the people of Kano State of his commitment to their welfare.

Additionally, the assembly appointed Lawan Hussaini as the Majority Leader and Garba Shehu as the Deputy Majority Leader, nominated by the ruling NNPP.

Muddasir Zawachiki, representing Kumbotso Constituency, assumed the role of Chief Whip.

Also, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) nominated Labaran Madari as the Minority Leader and Ayuba Labaran as the Minority Whip. With 26 members from NNPP and 14 from APC, the composition of the assembly reflects a majority for NNPP.
