Who Was The First Governor Of Lagos State?
The first governor of Lagos State was Brigadier Mobolaji Johnson, who served from May 27, 1967, when Lagos State was created from the former Colony of Lagos and the Lagos Federal Territory. Johnson served as governor until July 1975.
During his time, he played a part in setting up the new state amidst Nigeria’s challenging civil unrest. Mobolaji Johnson was born on February 9, 1936, and he had a notable military career. He went to CMS Grammar School in Lagos and then attended the Nigerian Military Training College.

Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu is the current Governor of Lagos State. He began his term on May 29, 2019, making him the 15th person to hold this position since Lagos State was created in 1967.
He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a political party that has been in charge of Lagos State since 1999. Babajide Sanwo-Olu was born on June 25, 1965, in Lagos.
He studied at the University of Lagos, where he got a Bachelor’s degree in Surveying and Geo-Informatics and later an MBA in Management. Also, he studied at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government and the London Business School.
Sanwo-Olu worked in the banking sector and became a General Manager. He started his public service career in 2003 as a Special Adviser to the Deputy Governor on Corporate Matters.

Who Is The Current Deputy Governor Of Lagos State?
Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat is the current Deputy Governor of Lagos State. He began his term on May 29, 2019, after winning the March 18, 2023, gubernatorial election with the All Progressives Congress (APC), he was re-elected for a second term.
He continues to work alongside Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, with whom he also ran in the 2019 elections. Dr. Hamzat was born on September 19, 1964, in Lagos.
He comes from a well-known family; his father, the late Oba Mufutau Olatunji Hamzat, was a notable figure in Lagos politics and served in different roles, including as a member of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Dr. Hamzat attended Odu Abore Memorial Primary School for his early education and Olivet Baptist High School for secondary education.
He went on to the University of Ibadan, and he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering in 1986 and a Master’s degree in the same field in 1988.
Later, he studied at Cranfield University in the UK, where he received a Ph.D. in System Process Engineering in 1992. He was the first student in his department to complete his doctorate in just three years.
Before starting his political career, Dr. Hamzat had worked for popular companies like Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, and Oando Plc, as the Chief Information Officer and Group Head of IT Strategy.
However, his public service career began in 2005 when he was appointed as the Commissioner for Science and Technology under Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
He continued in this role under Governor Babatunde Fashola, helping introduce modern technology to improve government operations.
In 2011, he became the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, managing major projects such as the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge and the expansion of the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
His experience in technical and infrastructure matters led to his role as Special Adviser on Technical Issues to the Minister of Works, Power, and Housing in 2016.
