Who Was The First Governor Of Enugu State?

Herbert Eze

Enugu State in Nigeria was created on August 27, 1991, when it was split from Anambra State. The first governor of Enugu state was Herbert Eze, who served as governor from August 1990 to January 1992 during a period of military rule.

Herbert Eze had a successful career in the Nigerian military and was a member of the Supreme Military Council during the regimes of Generals Murtala Mohammed and Olusegun Obasanjo in the 1970s.

As the first governor of Enugu State, Herbert Eze had the tough job of setting up all the new state’s systems and services from scratch.

This meant creating new government ministries, agencies, and offices. He also oversaw the building of government buildings and facilities needed for the state’s administration.

One of Eze’s main goals was to boost Enugu’s economy. He worked to bring life back to the state’s coal mining industry, which had declined over the years.

Eze also tried to attract new businesses and investments to help the state’s economy grow and become more diverse. In addition to economic development, Eze focused on improving social services in Enugu.

He made efforts to improve education and healthcare and improve rural infrastructure. This included setting up new schools, hospitals, and roads to better serve the people of Enugu and connect different parts of the state.

However, In January 1992, he handed over power to the new democratically elected governor, Okwesilieze Nwodo, following the military government’s transition plan.

Who Is The Current Governor Of Enugu State?

Peter Ndubuisi Mbah

The current Governor of Enugu State is Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who took office on May 29, 2023. Mbah is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and succeeded Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi in this role.

Peter Mbah earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of East London in the UK. After that, he was called to the Nigerian Bar, which allowed him to practice law in Nigeria.

He continued his education by getting a master’s degree in Maritime and Commercial Law from Lagos State University.

Mbah also holds an MBA from the IESE Business School at the University of Navarra in Spain and a Postgraduate Diploma in Strategy and Innovation from the Saïd Business School at the University of Oxford.

In 2021, he received an honorary doctorate in Political Science from Godfrey Okoye University in Enugu. Peter Mbah had a successful career in business before becoming Enugu governor.

He was the founder and CEO of Pinnacle Oil and Gas Ltd. Also, he started Peter Mbah Investments Limited and GILPEL Industries Ltd.

Besides his business achievements, he was the Chief of Staff and Commissioner for Finance and Economic Development under former Governor Chimaroke Nnamani.

Peter Mbah became the PDP’s candidate for governor after winning the party’s primary election on May 25, 2022. He won the governorship election held on March 18, 2023.

His campaign focused on improving the economy, building better infrastructure, and enhancing social welfare. His promises aimed to bring progress and stability to Enugu State.

Who Is The Current Deputy Governor Of Enugu State?

Ifeanyi Ossai

Ifeanyi Ossai is the current Deputy Governor of Enugu State. He took office on May 29, 2023, working alongside Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, who took over from Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi after the recent gubernatorial elections.

Martins Ifeanyi Ossai was born in Enugu State and he studied law and has been active in politics for several years. Ossai was a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, and he represented the Enugu North constituency during his time there. Ossai is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which is the main political party in Enugu State.

He ran on a platform that promised development, transparency, and good management of the state’s resources, and as the Deputy Governor, Ossai focused on several important areas like economic growth, better infrastructure, and improving social services.

One of his main goals is to improve education and healthcare services in the state. He wants to make sure that public schools are better and that healthcare facilities have what they need to provide good care.

Ossai is also interested in youth empowerment, working to create opportunities for young people and engage them in productive activities.
