List Of Taraba State Governors And Their Deputies (1992-Present)

The first governor of Taraba State was Jolly Tavoro Nyame, serving from January 3, 1992, to November 17, 1993. Taraba State was created on August 27, 1991, when it was separated from the former Gongola State by the military government led by General Ibrahim Babangida.

Nyame’s appointment came soon after the new state’s creation, starting a new era for the region. Jolly Nyame was born on May 7, 1955, in the Wukari Local Government Area of Taraba State.

He went to the University of Jos, and he earned a degree in Theology. Nyame was also involved in different businesses and worked in his community in different roles.

He was a member of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and was known for working to improve development and peace in Taraba State during his time as governor.

His administration worked on building infrastructure, improving education, and enhancing health care. However, Nyame’s time as governor was cut short by a military coup led by General Sani Abacha.

After being removed from office, he faced several legal issues, including a long corruption trial that started in 2007 related to his time as governor.

Who Is The Current Governor Of Taraba State?

Agbu Kefas

Agbu Kefas is the current Governor of Taraba State in Nigeria, having taken office term on May 29, 2023. Kefas is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Nigerian Army.

He was born on November 12, 1970, in Wukari, Taraba State, and comes from a family with a strong military background. His late brother, Air Commodore Ibrahim Kefas, was also in the military.

Kefas started his education at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna, and he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Defense Studies in 1994.

He continued his studies at the University of Ibadan and also got a Master’s degree in Legal Criminology & Security Psychology in 2005.

He later obtained another Master’s degree in Public Administration from Delta State University in 2008. Also, has taken executive courses at the Harvard Kennedy School.

Kefas served in the military for over 20 years. He was the Chairman of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) from 2013 to 2015 and was part of the Presidential Committee on North-East Initiative from 2016 to 2019.

However, Kefas joined politics in 2020 as the State Chairman of the PDP in Taraba. He won the gubernatorial primary in 2022 and was elected Governor in the March 2023 elections, winning by a large margin. He is married to Agyin, and they have four children.

Who Is The Current Deputy Governor Of Taraba State?

Aminu Abdullahi Alkali

The current Deputy Governor of Taraba State, Nigeria, is Aminu Abdullahi Alkali. He took office on May 29, 2023, after Governor Agbu Kefas, also from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), won the election.

Alkali has been a dedicated member of the PDP and has been involved in different state governance activities. Aminu Alkali was born in 1970 and before becoming Deputy Governor, he worked within the Taraba State government, focusing on areas like health and education.

And now as Deputy Governor, Alkali supports Governor Kefas and the PDP, especially amid ongoing legal issues about their election win.

He is confident that the PDP’s victory will be confirmed by the courts and has participated in legal proceedings related to the election disputes.

In his current role, Alkali leads the Task Force on Primary Health Care.

He has stressed the need to keep funding for primary health projects, which are important for the health of the state’s people.
