Who Was The First Civilian Governor Of Ondo State?
The first governor of Ondo State, Nigeria, was Ita David Ikpeme, who served as a military governor from February 3, 1976, to July 24, 1978. Ikpeme was appointed during the military rule of General Olusegun Obasanjo when Ondo State was created from the old Western State.
Ikpeme, who was a retired group captain in the Nigerian Air Force, studied Electrical Engineering at the University of London. While he was governor, he started many projects to improve the state, such as building roads in Akure, the capital.
However, later in life, he was involved in a controversy when he was accused of being part of a coup plot against General Ibrahim Babangida’s government in December 1985. After Ikpeme, the first civilian governor of Ondo State was Michael Adekunle Ajasin.
He served from October 1, 1979, to December 31, 1983. Ajasin was an important figure in Nigerian politics and was known for his work with the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). He focused on improving education and established Ondo State University and The Polytechnic in Owo.
Ajasin was also a leader in the fight for democracy and was arrested in 1995 for taking part in an illegal political meeting. He passed away on October 3, 1997.During his time as governor, Dr. Olufunmilayo Adebayo was his deputy.
Who Is The Current Governor Of Ondo State?
The current governor of Ondo State is Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa. He became governor on December 27, 2023, after the death of the former governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, on December 24, 2023.
Aiyedatiwa was born on January 12, 1965, in Obe-Nla, a community in Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State. His parents are Mr. Titus Akande and Mrs. Rosanah Moyebi Aiyedatiwa.
However, he started his education at Saint Peter’s Primary School in his hometown and finished in 1976. He went to Ikosi High School in Lagos and finished in 1982, and he earned a certificate in Economics and Government from Lagos State College of Education in 1986.
Aiyedatiwa worked as a teacher before moving into business, earning a diploma in Business Administration from the University of Ibadan in 2001.
He also studied at Lagos Business School and got a Master’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Liverpool in 2013.
Aiyedatiwa joined politics in 2011 with the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014.
He served as Deputy Governor of Ondo State before becoming governor. As governor, he aims to continue the work of his predecessor, focusing on education, security, and economic growth, especially in tourism, agriculture, and energy.
Ondo State is a major cocoa producer in Nigeria and has great potential in other areas like oil, gas, and manufacturing.

Who Is The Current Deputy Governor Of Ondo State?
Olayide Adelami is the current Deputy Governor of Ondo State, Nigeria. He took office on February 1, 2024, after being chosen by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and his appointment was confirmed by the Ondo State House of Assembly.
This change happened because the former governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, passed away in December 2023, which led to a need for new leadership.
Olayide Adelami was born in 1958 in Owo, Ondo State. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Lagos and an MBA from Ogun State University.
However, before he became a politician, he worked as the Deputy Clerk of the National Assembly and retired from that role in April 2018.
In 2020, Adelami ran for governor of Ondo State under the All Progressives Congress (APC) but did not win. As Deputy Governor, Adelami helps the governor with running the state and is also the next in line if anything happens to the governor.
During his swearing-in ceremony, he promised to work hard for the development of Ondo State and to support Governor Aiyedatiwa’s leadership.
