The largest local government areas (LGAs) in Ekiti State by population, according to the 2022 population projections, are as follows:
1. Ado-Ekiti
Ado-Ekiti is the largest with a population of 469,700. It is not only the most populous LGA but also the state capital. Ado-Ekiti serves as the headquarters of the Ekiti Central Senatorial District.
As the seat of the state government, it has a busy economy driven by public sector jobs and a growing number of businesses. Government offices and various commercial activities support the large population, making Ado-Ekiti the most important LGA in the state.
2. Ijero
Ijero is the second-largest LGA with a population of 332,200. The main source of income in Ijero is agriculture, especially cocoa production, which thrives due to the fertile land and good climate. Other important crops grown there include kola nut and palm oil.

Ado-Ekiti, the capital city of Ekiti State, is home to Ekiti State University (EKSU). This city is not only the largest but also the most populated local government area (LGA) in the state.
Ado Ekiti serves as a key center for education, commerce, and government in the region. Ekiti State University was founded in 1982. Over the years, the university has changed its name several times.
It was once called Obafemi Awolowo University, Ado-Ekiti, then Ondo State University, followed by the University of Ado-Ekiti. The university is located in Ado-Ekiti and occupies a large area in the heart of the LGA.
