Who Was The First Governor Of Ogun State?
Major General Saidu Ayodele Balogun was the first governor of Ogun State, serving from March 1976 to July 1978. Ogun State was created on February 3, 1976, when the old Western State was divided during Nigeria’s military rule.
Balogun was appointed by General Olusegun Obasanjo, who was the military head of state at that time. Major General Balogun was born on April 20, 1941, and he has had a notable military career.
He was an infantry brigade commander during the coup in July 1975 that removed General Yakubu Gowon from power. However, Balogun faced many challenges. One major issue was setting up a functioning government in a newly created state.
At the start, government workers had to travel from Ibadan in the neighboring Oyo State to Abeokuta, which was the new capital of Ogun State. By the end of his term, most workers had found housing in Abeokuta, which helped reduce the difficulties of running the government.
Balogun’s government also worked on building important infrastructure. Many government offices were rented. Efforts were made to find permanent buildings for these offices. Also, his administration focused on improving education and healthcare.
One of his achievements was the establishment of the Ogun State School of Health Technology in Ilese-Ijebu. Even though Balogun’s time as governor was short, he played a part in setting up the state. After Balogun, Colonel Harris Eghagha took over and continued the military governance style until civilian rule was restored in 1979.
