How Many Members Are There In The Bauchi State House Of Assembly?
The Bauchi State House of Assembly, serving as the legislative body of Bauchi State in Nigeria, comprises 31 members.
These members are elected from the 20 local government areas in the state, referred to as state constituencies. To ensure equal representation, local government areas with larger populations are divided into two constituencies.
This setup maintains justice in representation across the state. However, the primary functions of the assembly include the creation of new laws, changes or revocations of existing laws, and oversight of the executive branch.
Members of the assembly are elected to serve four-year terms, aligning with the tenure of federal legislators in Nigeria’s Senate and House of Representatives.
Regular sessions of the assembly take place three times a week, specifically on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays. These sessions occur in the assembly complex located in the state capital, Bauchi.
Through these sessions and their legislative duties, the Bauchi State House of Assembly plays an important role in the legal framework and governance of Bauchi State.

Who Is The Current Speaker Of The Bauchi State House Of Assembly?
The current Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly is Babayo Akuyam. He hails from Hardawa Constituency in Misau Local Government Area of the state. Akuyam assumed office as Speaker following a recent election by the House.
This leadership change occurred after the Appeal Court in Abuja invalidated the election of the former Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman, who represented Ningi Central Constituency.
Suleiman, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), had won the election with 16,866 votes, defeating his closest rival from the All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, the APC candidate challenged the election results, leading to a legal battle. The Governorship and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal initially upheld Suleiman’s victory, but the APC candidate pursued the case to the Court of Appeal.
In its ruling, the appellate court overturned the tribunal’s decision, ordering a rerun election in 10 polling units. Therefore, Suleiman was removed from office, paving the way for the election of Babayo Akuyam as the new Speaker.
This change in leadership underscores the importance of due process and the judiciary in resolving electoral disputes.
As Babayo Akuyam assumes the role of Speaker, it is expected that he will uphold the principles of fairness, accountability, and representation in serving the people of Bauchi State.

Who Is The Current Deputy Speaker Of The Bauchi State House Of Assembly?
The current Deputy Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly is Ahmed Abdullahi. His appointment followed a series of legal actions that led to the removal of the previous Speaker, Abubakar Suleiman, and his deputy, Jamilu Barade.
The Appeal Court in Abuja nullified the election of Suleiman, citing alleged over-voting, which prompted a rerun in certain polling units.
Shortly after, Jamilu Barade, the deputy speaker and a member of the PDP, was also sacked from his position representing Bauchi Central Constituency.
This triggered a quick response from the House, which elected Ahmed Abdullahi, representing Dass Constituency in Dass LGA, as the new Deputy Speaker.
The election process was reportedly uncontested, with Akuyam and Abdullahi elected as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively, during a plenary session.
These developments underline the legal and political turbulence within the state’s legislative assembly. Despite the challenges, the House moved to fill the vacant leadership positions to ensure continuity in governance.
Both the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker were sworn in by the Clerk of the House, Umar Gital, signaling the official assumption of their duties.
Ahmed Abdullahi’s appointment as Deputy Speaker highlights the dynamic nature of politics and governance in Bauchi State.
As the legislative arm guides through legal hurdles and political transitions, the new leadership aims to keep the constituents’ interests and promote the assembly’s effective functioning.
