The Ministry of State for Water Resources and Sanitation in Nigeria was established in 2023 under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
This new ministry was created to tackle important issues related to water supply, sanitation, and irrigation across the country.
The goal of the ministry is to ensure that water resources are managed sustainably, which is important for public health, food security, and fair access to clean water for everyone in Nigeria. Since its creation, there has been only one individual appointed to serve as Minister of State for Water Resources.

Who Is The Minister Of State For Water Resources And Sanitation In Nigeria?
Bello Muhammad Goronyo is the current Minister of State for Water Resources and Sanitation in Nigeria. He was appointed to this position in August 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Goronyo’s role is essential in addressing Nigeria’s water and sanitation issues, given his vast experience in law, politics, and public service.
Born on January 1, 1966, in Sabon Garin Dole, located in the Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, Goronyo started his education at Kofar Marke Primary School in Sokoto, finishing in 1981.
He continued his education at Government College Sokoto, now known as Nagarta College, where he completed his secondary education in 1986.
Goronyo first earned a Diploma in Law from the College of Arts and Sciences in Sokoto in 1990. He then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Usman Danfodio University, Sokoto, in 1997.
Although he was exempted from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) due to his age, he attended the Nigerian Law School in Bwari, Abuja, and was called to the Bar in 2001.
His quest for knowledge continued as he achieved several advanced degrees. He completed a Master’s in Energy Security Management at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in Kaduna in 2019. He also earned a Master’s in Business Management and Leadership from the London Graduate School in the UK.
Also, he achieved a Master of Philosophy in Leadership and Strategic Studies from NDA in 2021 and is currently working towards a Ph.D. in Leadership and Strategic Studies at the same institution.
Goronyo began his political career by being elected to the Sokoto State House of Assembly, where he served from 2007 to 2015.
During his time in the assembly, he held several leadership positions, including Minority Leader and Deputy Speaker.
After his tenure in the assembly, he worked as a Commissioner in the Sokoto State Government from 2015 to 2018, overseeing different ministries.
He was also active in the All Progressives Congress (APC), serving as the Zonal Secretary for the North West and as the Director of National Youth Mobilization for the APC Presidential Campaign Council in 2023. In addition, Bello Muhammad Goronyo is married and has four children.
