Who Was The First Governor Of Gombe State?
The first Governor of Gombe State in Nigeria was Alhaji Abubakar Habu Hashidu, who began his role on May 29, 1999.
This was shortly after Gombe State was created on October 1, 1996. The new state was formed from parts of the old Bauchi State when General Sani Abacha was in power.
Before Hashidu became governor, the state was managed by military administrators. Born on April 10, 1944, in Hashidu (now part of Gombe State), Hashidu had a career in politics even before becoming governor.
During the military government of General Ibrahim Babangida, he held several positions. He was the Minister of Water Resources, Minister of Agriculture, and Minister of Rural Development.
Also, he played a part in the Vision 2010 committee, which worked on plans for Nigeria’s future during General Sani Abacha’s rule.
Hashidu was elected as the governor representing the All People’s Party (APP). His deputy was Joshua Lidani. During his time as governor, Hashidu worked on improving the state’s infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
In January 2003, Hashidu was chosen again to be the APP’s candidate for governor. However, he lost the election in April 2003.
Despite this loss, he accepted the result positively and praised the Independent National Electoral Commission for fair elections.
After his term, he continued to be involved in politics and ran for governor again in 2007 with the Democratic Peoples Party (DPP). Sadly, Alhaji Abubakar Habu Hashidu passed away on July 27, 2018, at the age of 74.
