Who Was The First Governor Of Kebbi State?

Major General Patrick Aziza

The first governor of Kebbi State was Major General Patrick Aziza. He was appointed when Kebbi State was created on August 27, 1991, by splitting off from Sokoto State. Aziza’s governorship began on August 28, 1991, and lasted until January 1992.

Patrick Aziza was born on December 23, 1947, in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State. He had a distinguished career in the military before becoming governor. Aziza completed his secondary education in Ibadan and then joined the Nigerian Army.

He graduated from the Nigeria Defence Academy in Kaduna in 1970 and was Brigade Commander of the Amphibious Brigade in Calabar.

As the first military governor of Kebbi State, Aziza worked to establish the state’s administrative framework during a period when Nigeria was moving from military to civilian rule.

This change was seen by political changes and uncertainty. After Aziza’s term ended in January 1992, he was succeeded by Abubakar Musa, who became the first civilian governor of Kebbi State.

Following his governorship, Patrick Aziza served as the Minister of Communications and later as the Minister of Commerce and Tourism under different military regimes. Aziza also played a part in major political events in Nigeria, including helping General Sani Abacha come to power.

He chaired the Special Military Tribunal that convicted former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Major General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua in 1995 for their alleged involvement in a coup plot.
