An Overview of Delta State

The capital of Delta State is Asaba and it is located in the geographic South-South zone of Nigeria. It shares borders with Edo State, Anambra State, Rivers State, Bayelsa State, Atlantic Ocean, and Ondo State.

With approximately 16,842 square kilometers; it is mostly flat and lacks notable hills. In 1991, the southern part of the former Bendel State was established to form the State.

Who is the Current Governor of Delta State?

Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori

The current Governor of Delta State is; Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Orohwedor Oborevwori. He was born in Osubi town, Delta State’s Okpe Local Government Area On June 19, 1963.

He did his early schooling at Alegbo Primary School, and he did his secondary education, at Oghareki Grammar School.

Later on, Oborevwori graduated with a political science bachelor’s degree from Ambrose Ali University in Ekpoma and a political science master’s degree from Delta State University in Abraka.

He is married to Mrs. Oborevwori Tobore, who in 2011, was kidnapped by gunmen along Osubi road in Okpe Local Government Area, Delta State; the perpetrators were apprehended and sentenced to 21 years in jail.

Political Career

Oborevwori held several jobs before entering politics, such as Chairman of the Okpe Community and Councillor. His election under the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP) thrust him into the limelight as he was a member of the Delta State House of Assembly representing the Okpe State Constituency in 2015.

After the impeachment of the former Speaker, Rt Hon. Monday Igbuya in 2017 then Oborevwori was chosen to be the new Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly. Then in 2019, he was re-elected to be Speaker for a second term.

Professional Affiliations and Recognitions

So far, Oborevwori is a member of multiple professional associations, such as the Institute of Chartered Mediators and Conciliators (FICMC), the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered), and the Chartered Management Consultant Chartered Institute of Management Consultants (Canada).

Among the honors bestowed upon him for his services are the Legislative Icon Award from the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) and the Ukodo of Okpe chieftaincy.

Who is the Current Deputy Governor of Delta State?

Monday Onyeme

The Current Deputy Governor is Monday Onyeme. He is noted for his competence in accounting and finance, as well as his humanitarian activities.

As the Chairman of the Delta State Internal Income Service, he was credited with boosting the state’s income generation.

In 2023, Governor Oborevwori recognized Onyeme for his “loyal, dependable, and trusted partnership” in the administration’s “MORE Agenda” state goal.

Additionally, Onyeme has received recognition for his services to Delta State’s community development and education.

In addition to being a member of the International Association of Lions Club, where he held the position of District Governor, he bears the traditional title of Odoziani 1 of Ibabu Kingdom.

Background and Early Life

Born March 30, 1965, in Ibabu, Onicaha Ukwuani, in Ndokwa West Delta State, he attended his Primary school in Sokoto and his secondary school in Kebbi State. He went on to study Accounting at the University of Calabar.

Professional and Political Career

After graduating from the University, Onyeme held positions as a bursar, accountant, and lecturer at several establishments, including the National Open University of Nigeria, Commercial Trust Bank, and the Federal Polytechnic Kaura Namoda.

Finally, in 2015, Onyeme was named Chairman of the Delta State Board of Internal Revenue. He served in that capacity until 2022 when he was chosen to be Sheriff Oborevwori’s running partner and deputy governorship candidate for the PDP.
