How Many Members Are In The Enugu House Of Assembly?
The Enugu State House of Assembly comprises 24 members. Since 1999, all the 24 constituencies that constitute the Enugu State House of Assembly have consistently been represented by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
However, a notable shift occurred in the March 18th, 2023 election. This election marked a departure from the usual dominance of the PDP, as the Labour Party (LP) emerged as a formidable contender.
The LP gained traction, largely driven by the popularity of its Former Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi. Out of the 24 constituencies, the LP secured victory in 14 seats, while the PDP retained 10 seats.
This outcome signified a major electoral milestone, breaking the long-standing monopoly of the PDP in the Enugu State House of Assembly.

Who Is The Current Speaker And Deputy Of The Enugu House Of Assembly?
The current Speaker of the Enugu House of Assembly is Hon. Uche Ugwu, who represents the Udi North State Constituency. Hon. Uche Ugwu was elected as the Speaker of the 8th Assembly.
The motion was set by the Clerk of the House, Dr. Emmanuel Udaya, who relied on an existing House rule that the Speaker and Deputy Speaker would be ranking members of the House.
During the nomination process, Iloabuchi Aniagu of Nkanu West State Constituency nominated the immediate past Deputy Speaker, Hon. Uche Ugwu, for the position of Speaker.
This was seconded by Chukwudi Nwankwo, the Member-elect for Awgu South. With no other nominations, Uche Ugwu was declared the Speaker.
For the position of Deputy Speaker, Hon. Jane Eneh of Awgu North Constituency nominated Prince Ezenta Ezeani of Igboetiti West Constituency, which was seconded by Okey Mba, Member-elect of Nkanu East.
Ezenta Ezeani was then declared the Deputy Speaker of the Enugu 8th House of Assembly. In his acceptance speech, Hon. Uche Ugwu vowed to work with the executive to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.
He emphasized collaboration with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision for disruptive innovation and economic growth to eradicate poverty.
Hon. Ugwu assured that the 8th Assembly would prioritize positive engagement, discussion, and negotiation over confrontation, with the overall interest of Enugu in mind.
He also promised to lead inclusively, regardless of party affiliation, and solicited maximum cooperation from assembly members to achieve their desired results.
The 8th Assembly, under Hon. Uche Ugwu’s leadership, aims to be a source of strength and unity for the people of Enugu State.
