The Federal Ministry of Power in Nigeria is responsible for managing the country’s electricity supply. It was created in 1970 and was originally part of the Ministry of Mines and Power. The ministry’s main job is to make sure that all Nigerians have access to reliable electricity.
However, this ministry has worked on different policies to improve the power sector, including the National Electric Power Policy in 2001 and the Electric Power Sector Reform Act in 2005. In 2015, the ministry was restructured to focus more on power issues.

Parastatals Under The Ministry Of Power
As we’ve said, the Ministry of Power in Nigeria is responsible for ensuring that the country has a reliable electricity supply. And, to achieve this, it works with several agencies and parastatals, which are organizations set up by the government to help manage specific tasks.
Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC)
NERC is responsible for regulating the electricity sector in Nigeria. It ensures that electricity is provided fairly and efficiently. The commission sets rules and standards for electricity providers and protects the rights of consumers.
Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)
TCN manages the transmission of electricity across the country. It operates the national grid, which is the network that delivers electricity from power plants to consumers.
Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA)
NEMSA is responsible for ensuring that electricity services meet safety and quality standards. This agency conducts inspections and tests to ensure that electrical installations and equipment are safe for public use.
Rural Electrification Agency (REA)
REA focuses on providing electricity to rural areas in Nigeria. Many rural communities lack access to reliable power, and this agency works to develop projects that bring electricity to these underserved areas.
Nigerian Electricity Liability Management Company (NELMCO)
NELMCO manages the liabilities of the electricity sector, particularly those related to debts and financial obligations. They help to stabilize the financial aspects of the electricity market.
National Power Training Institute (NAPTIN)
NAPTIN provides training and capacity building for professionals in the power sector. They aim to improve the skills of workers in the industry, ensuring that they are well-equipped to handle the challenges of the electricity sector.
Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET)
NBET is responsible for buying electricity in bulk from power producers and selling it to distribution companies. This organization plays a part in making sure that the electricity market operates smoothly.

Current Minister Of Power In Nigeria
Adebayo Adelabu is the current Minister of Power in Nigeria, having taken office on August 21, 2023. However, Adelabu had a successful career in banking and finance.
He was the Deputy Governor for Operations at the Central Bank of Nigeria from April 9, 2014, to May 24, 2018. Born on September 28, 1970, in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Adelabu comes from a well-known family.
His grandfather, Adegoke Adelabu, was a prominent figure. Adebayo attended Lagelu Grammar School in Ibadan for his secondary education.
He then went on to Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a first-class degree in Accounting before he went to Harvard Business School in the USA.
Adelabu’s professional career began at PriceWaterhouse, now known as PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC). He worked there for seven years, handling various audit and consultancy projects for large banks and other financial institutions.
In 1999, he was seconded to the Central Bank of Nigeria for a year, where he led a finance team on a major project called “Project EAGLES.”
After leaving PwC in 2000, Adelabu joined First Atlantic Bank as the Financial Controller and Group Head of Risk Management and Controls.
He was promoted to Chief Inspector of the Bank in 2002 and later became Group Head of National Public Sector Business in 2003.
In 2009, he moved to Standard Chartered Bank as the West African Regional Head of Finance and Strategy for the Consumer Banking Business, with offices in both Lagos and Accra.
Adelabu’s career continued as he became the Executive Director and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of First Bank of Nigeria Plc at the age of 39. In 2014, he was appointed Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria by former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Aside from his banking career, Adelabu was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nigeria InterBank Settlement Systems (NIBSS) and the Board of the Financial Institution Training Centre (FITC).
He also served on the boards of the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), Nigeria Security Printing and Minting Company (NSPMC), the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), and the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk-Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL).
Adelabu is also a successful businessman. He has investments in hospitality, entertainment, agriculture, and real estate, and he is the Group Chairman of Bayse One Group of Hotels, the Best Western Plus Hotels in Ibadan, and Bayse One Farm.
In his political career, Adelabu ran for the governorship of Oyo State in 2019 as a candidate for the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost to Oluwaseyi Makinde of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
He later left the APC and joined the Accord Party, where he aimed to run again for governor. In July 2023, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu included Adelabu in his 28-man ministerial nomination. On August 16, 2023, Adelabu was appointed as the Minister of Power.
