Current Minister Of Marine And Blue Economy In Nigeria

Gboyega Oyetola

Gboyega Oyetola is the current Minister of Marine and Blue Economy in Nigeria. He was appointed on August 21, 2023, by President Bola Tinubu. This position was newly created, so he is the first person to hold it.

Before this, he was the Governor of Osun State from November 27, 2018, to November 27, 2022, having taken over from Rauf Aregbesola and was succeeded by Ademola Adeleke.

Oyetola was born on September 29, 1954, in Iragbiji, which is in present-day Osun State, Nigeria. He attended Ifeoluwa Grammar School in Osogbo and graduated in 1972.

Then he went to the University of Lagos, where he got a degree in Insurance in 1978. After that, he completed his National Youth Service Corps year in Potiskum, Yobe State, where he lectured at the Staff Training Centre.

Later, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Lagos in 1990. However, Oyetola started his career in insurance.

In 1980, he joined Leadway Assurance Company Limited as an area manager. He worked there until 1987, then moved to Crusader Insurance Company Limited as an Underwriting Manager until 1990.

From 1990 to 1991, he worked as a Technical Controller at Alliance and General Insurance. In 1991, he founded his own company, Silvertrust Insurance Brokers Limited, and was its managing director until 2011.

He also served as Executive Vice Chairman of the Paragon Group of Companies and Chairman of Ebony Properties Limited.

Also, he was a Director of Pyramid Securities Limited until 2011. Oyetola is an Associate Member of the Chartered Insurance Institute in both London and Nigeria, and he is a member of the Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM).

However, Oyetola’s political journey began with the Alliance for Democracy (AD). He stayed with the party through its changes to Action Congress (AC), Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), and now the All Progressives Congress (APC).

In July 2018, he competed for the gubernatorial candidacy of the APC for the Osun State election and won. He was sworn in as governor on November 27, 2018.

However, the election tribunal in Abuja later declared that the APC and Oyetola were not validly elected. On August 2, 2023, President Bola Tinubu nominated Oyetola as one of the new ministers.

Initially, he was appointed as the Minister of Transportation on August 16, 2023, but was moved to the newly created Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy just four days later.

Oyetola’s career has not been without controversy. The Pandora Papers revealed that he bought a London mansion through an offshore company he formed.

This house was bought from Kola Aluko, who was wanted for money laundering. The house, valued at £17 million, was bought for £9 million. This mansion is also known as the residence of Bola Tinubu when he is in London for medical treatment.
