Who Was The First Governor Of Oyo State?
The first governor of Oyo State was Colonel David Jemibewon, serving in March 1976, right after the state was created on February 3, 1976.
Oyo State was formed when the former Western State of Nigeria was split into three new states: Oyo, Ogun, and Ondo.
This change was made to improve how the country was managed and governed. Colonel Jemibewon was a military officer who led Oyo State during a time when the country was under military rule.
However, his time in office lasted until July 1978. He was then succeeded by Colonel Paul Tarfa. During Jemibewon’s term, he focused on setting up the state’s government and dealing with the issues that come with managing a new state.
Jemibewon tried hard to build infrastructure, such as roads and schools. His goal was to lay down a strong foundation for the future of Oyo State.
After Jemibewon, Oyo State moved back to civilian rule when Chief Bola Ige was elected as governor on October 1, 1979. Chief Bola Ige was the first civilian Governor of Oyo state.
